Women

Last week, at a Church Planting Conference, the pastor of Mars Hill in Seattle, Mark Driscoll, made (on video) what I think are some pretty degrading allusions (is that the right word?) about women in ministry. In the video, he kept talking about having the right MAN for church planting and at one point referred to women as "ladies" who love jesus (in a very "Men are totally superior to women" way.

I've been so bothered by this video. It did start a mini-fued between Driscoll and Bill Hybels. I'm really bothered because I don't think there should be any more debate or question as to whether women can and should be ministers. Women and men can both be ministers!

While I was lamenting the poison (did I say something caustic too?) Mr. Driscoll was spreading, I learned about this moving, uplifting and awe-inspiring video. It made me cry and it made me sing. Thank you, Jennifer.

ht to marko -- who I can ht again now that he's on his speaking sabbatical. I don't know why I can ht him again -- I just decided I could, so there.

Thank heaven for little girls
thank heaven for them all,
no matter where no matter who
for without them, what would little boys do?

kirk, as a woman in ministry, i really appreciate this. it's sad some of the stuff that still comes up in 2007. the most damaging, i think is when people say that God is disappointed in me and views me as disobedient and in rebellion to God's word. part of me wants to laugh, the other part cry. the video was interesting to me. i liked it. i think it could have had more of an impact if it included women from many different racial/ethnic groups (all of these women were white except for a photo of a woman holding a black girl) i still appreciated it and know that diversity wasn't on the radar of this artist, perhaps. anyway, thanks!! (sorry for the beastly long comment.) xoxo

Words like that are just so awful -- Shame on anyone for saying that to you or anyone else.

If it were not for women we would not be here. I would not be a educated (I feel)and a ,God believing person. I know people that still have problems with women in leadership rolls and I am not one of them. If it were not for women we would all be lost!

mars hill graduate school is, by no means!, associated with that place mr. driscoll is at. i feel that women have a very special place in ministry and give us a great view of things.

Thank you for the clarification, Johny. What's the word on the hill?
