Edge

Sermon podcast from today, Scout Sunday - 2-3-19 - at St. Paul's UCC in Downers Grove, IL. Luke 4:21-30.  Our boilers stopped working very early in the morning so the sanctuary was a crisp 60 degrees F.

Pastoral prayer

A few weeks back, just at the end of the children's sermon at Union Congregational UCC in Somonauk, one of the youngest children walked up to me and reached her hands up towards me. I held them as we closed in prayer.

Here's a picture of that moment:

The Priscilla and Aquila Song

Today the Sunday School classes at Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Somonauk, IL were learning about early missionaries Priscilla and Aquila. Usually I present a children's sermon with a puppet talking about what was coming up in Sunday School. No puppet today, however. Instead -- it was this silly song!

An earthquake and a children's sermon

I didn't feel this morning's midwest earthquake. (My 10 year old may have -- he said that at about 4:40 he woke up to go to the bathroom and tripped unexplainedly on the way to the bathroom.) But in a freakish coincidence, I talked about earthquakes in Illinois in last Sunday's (April 13) children's sermon at Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Somonauk, IL. Josh (the dog puppet who was with me for the sermon) lost an ear as we were shaking to illustrate the earthquake that opened the prison doors for Paul and Silas.

Ruth and Naomi

I'm not sure how well they translate into audio only, but each week we have a children's sermon at Union Congregational Church that features one or more puppets. This week Fred (my dad) and I had Esmerelda the Goose and Rachel the Raccoon introducing the story of Ruth and Naomi. They started off a little confused by making it like Cinderella -- Fred and I helped them to understand things differently.
