In this week’s Bible reading from John 4:5-42, there are several reasons why Jesus could have (and some would say . . . should have) ignored or treated with disdain the woman he met at the well.

• She was a woman. Proper Jewish men of Jesus’ time didn’t speak freely with women. They certainly didn’t talk theology with women and would never be caught in public alone with a strange woman.
• She was a Samaritan. Samaritans and Jews didn’t mix. Why? Because Samaritans had mixed with non- Jews and were considered not only unclean, but reprehensible to Jews.
• She had a less than perfect past. “You have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband.”

Jesus not only did not ignore this woman, he ignored the social taboos without a thought. He met a woman and told her, in marvelous Jesus form, about the kind of wholeness and life that he offers.

No matter who, no matter what, no matter where . . .
