Returning

It's community worship time!  Tonight folks from all the congregations in Somonauk gather for our annual community Thanksgiving Eve service at Somonauk Baptist Church.  Service starts at 7:00 pm.  This year I'm delivering the sermon -- it's called "Returning."  Y'all are invited  - and if you want, bring a loaf of bread to share and stay afterwards for cookies, too!

Thankful for Our God Who Loves

What an amazing experience tonight.  The 5 Somonauk churches (Somonauk Baptist Church, Somonauk United Presbyterian Church, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, St. John Lutheran Church and Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ) gathered for a shared Thanksgiving Eve worship service.  The spirit-filled worship and sense of community was wonderful.  The community choir moved us and gave us chills.  And the inspired preaching of my friend, Rev. David B. Johnson reminded us that loving is what God does.  Thanks to all the participating congregations and clergy tonight -- let's do it again soon!

This evening we had an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve Prayer Service in Somonauk. St. John Lutheran Church, Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church joined together for a time to pray and worship together. Being one of the new kids in town, I got to deliver the sermon! It was a short one -

Turkey Bowl

Yesterday morning I was part of the 8th annual Turkey Bowl football game at St. Matthew UCC. We had a great group of people -- all ages -- who got together for a lighthearted football game and snacks afterwards. (The official game score after playing for 45 minutes was . . . tied.) We have a really old turkey that had been in someone's freezer for years that we've mounted on a trophy stand. We call it the 'Turkeyardi" trophy. (It is also the turkey that starred in last year's Thanksgiving horror movie, 'The Turkey's Revenge.' Here are the Turkey Bowl 2006 pictures too!
