Warrenville Today - online!

I wrote last year about the "newspaper battle" in Warrenville between the Warrenville Today and the (now defunct) Warrenville Clipper. Today I was checking in on the Warrenville Today website (it had been inactive for quite some time) and found that the current issue of the Today is available as a pdf download! Click through to "This Week's Issue" and you'll be able to view (in sections) the whole paper -- and the photos are in color!

Newspaper battle in Warrenville -- Last Round?

Apparently things turned a little ugly.
Our little town, for a little while, had two local newspapers.
The Warrenville Today: Which has been published here for more than a year
The Warrenville Clipper: Which folded a couple of weeks ago after publishing only 16 issues.

As I read both papers every week, I noticed a few things

The Clipper had a superior method for printing. The text was crisp, the pictures clear and the advertisements sharp.
The Today continues to have a method for printing that leaves the ads with some jaggy edges and with the pictures often too dark.

I hope the Today considers using the printers that the Clipper used.

The Clipper's columns and sports reporting were wonderful. The neighborhood news often seemed like it wasn't treated with as much care. What could have been exciting news too often sounded mundane
The Today's reporting is sharp and exciting. The columns have excellent character to them too.

I would love it if the Today invited some of the columnists from the Clipper to write for the Today.

The Clipper had (and still has) a wonderful web presence with the papers available anytime online.
The Today has a brand-new website -- but without any real content yet.

I hope the Today invites some of the web knowledge from the Clipper and establishes a significant web presence.

Rumors abound about some nastiness between the two papers. The Editor for the Clipper put it this way:

". . . there were too many personal attacks and other shenanigans perpetrated by those connected to the other paper."

I don't know what exactly went on. It sounds like there were some hurt feelings and that it's not anywhere near to being resolved. (Here's a link to an article from the Daily Herald about the situation.)

I hope the Today continues to publish and that any healing that needs to take place can begin.

More Warrenville news

I suppose I could tell you all the great things about the little town I live in. I could have more fun with the "Warrenville Today" vs "Warrenville Clipper" newspaper saga, but I really don't think much will come of it. I think we'll just have two hometown papers for awhile or even awhile longer.

I suppose I could also tell you about all the area events coming up that are in or around this great little town. However, I don't need to! Now there's a site that is doing it way better than I could. We've had the local Warrenville municipal site, the Warrenville Park District site, the Warrenville Chamber of Commerce site and the Warrenville Public Library site. (They got the cool name.) And now there's a site that, I think, is a marvelous place to go to find out little tidbits, interesting items and lots of upcoming events in and around Warrenville. Apparently Warrenville is hitting the big time.

Newspaper battle in Warrenville -- Round 1

It seems like just a year ago when we had no town newspaper.
Then a new one came up -- Warrenville Today (no website, but you can send email)
Warrenville today has now published 50 weekly issues and covers all the local events. (They were the first to publish the article about my "giving up church for lent" sabbatical) They've also made comments about politics in Warrenville and, I think, have ruffled some feathers in the process.
Now this week comes the Warrenville Clipper -- a similar, homegrown newspaper for Warrenville. They do have a website -- and you can view the latest issue of the paper in .pdf form

Both papers have free delivery to Warrenville residents. Both have local advertising and local news.

My guess is that the Clipper was formed by the people who were angry about something the Today said.

Hopefully both papers will be be better as a result of the competition.
