Saturday Morning Veggies

VeggieTales is coming to NBC! (And Telemundo and Ion too) Phil Vischer, the former head tomato for Big Idea Productions, has made the announcement. Classic Media, the current owner of VeggieTales -- and all of Big Idea, inc (Notice the slight name change?) is going to be providing the Saturday morning kids programming beginning September 9. And VeggieTales (and 3-2-1 Penguins too) are scheduled to be part of the mix! Phil wrote an article yesterday explaining how his new company, Jellyfish, and others are involved. You can read about it on his website --
Here's the short gist from Phil:

. . . we've had a whole lot of fun creating a new hosting concept for the shows, including a new TV theme song and some wacky running jokes and gags. Instead of the kitchen counter top, we now go over to Bob's house. Larry joins in, and several of Bob's 'neighbors' (including Mr. Lunt, Archibald and Pa Grape), show up uninvited to bask in the glow of real TV exposure. Everyone knows their on TV, so they're all doing their best to get the attention of… well, whomever. Simon Cowell, I think. Of course, as is always the case, results are mixed, but rather silly.

I already found it and got a season pass for it on TIVO.

Thanks for the info. I followed some links to http://www.philvischer.com/index.php/?page_id=7 where there's some detail about Big Idea's bankruptcy .. I was very surprised.

It's a pretty overwhelming story -- isn't it? I read the whole upmteen page description about the fall of Big Idea on Phil's page earlier this year. He's going to talk about it when he speaks at a convention I'm going to in late November.

do you have a link to the details? That company had everything going for it: Great scripturally-grounded thoughtful humorous storytelling that appealed to all ages, phenomenal word-of-mouth advertising, historically successful market saturation, and a company that looked -- from the outside at least -- like a great place to work.

Plus, the heroes were all vegetables!

Don't tell me the company's 'fall' involved an apple...

Veggie Tales is somewhat boring. I used to have my Sunday School class (preK-3rd grade) watch it. I found it hard to keep them in their seats for one episode.

I think that more interesting and fun christian children's programs need to be created.

It looks like the link on Phil's site disappeared. But it's still alive in deep-search land. Try philvischer.com/bigidea_archives/Killed_BigIdea1.htm for as long as it's there.

What's this -- a VeggieTales non-lover? Well then, you and millions of other people have a different opinion than I do. I do have a friend that is working on some newer programming, however. When I can say something about it I'll post it here.

I think anything can be boring if a person gets a lot of it. I imagine my kids have most of those videos memorized.

Jessica, how would you describe the sort of kids' programming that might be more engaging to your sunday school students?

Hey steve -- with your visit you became the 2000th visitor to the blog since late March. (When I started counting.)
No free watch or anything awaits you, however.
